Java Developer

The Job:
Our Client is a young, thriving, software development company providing solutions for Fortune Global 500 companies. Their products are designed to address the systems management challenges existing in large heterogeneous environments. The quality and popularity of their products are evident in their strong and growing customer base.

We are currently seeking a Java Developer to add to their Toronto-based R&D team. Their solutions are supported on all major operating systems including UNIX, Linux, Windows, z/OS, Tandem, and OS/400.

The primary responsibility of this position will be to work on the server component of the Workload Automation Engine and User Interface design. This position is an opportunity to work on a creative and dynamic distributed team, collaborating with others in the GTA development group in order to ensure the highest quality is delivered for maintenance and new development projects.

NOTE: This is a permanent full-time opportunity to work from home - you will be supplied with hardware and software/licenses and join a group within a proven team structure. Daily tasks will be performed independantly or in collaboration with other members of the Java Development team and include regular face-to-face meetings.

What you'll do:

Contribute positively to a productive, creative, business-oriented and quality-oriented team environment.
Involvement in all stages of the development life cycle of a commercial, multi-platform, distributed system software product to ensure usability and quality at each step.
Design and development of features based upon product requirements.
Some customer support activities as required.

What you need:

Minimum experience of five years with server side Java development, including multi-threaded concepts.
Proficiency with GWT or SmartGWT a plus, including UI design.
Proficiency with Eclipse.
Strong knowledge of software architecture and best-practices.
Proficient with a minimum of two of the following operating systems: Linux, Windows, Solaris, MacOS
Experience working with Tomcat as an application container.
Familiarity with Agile development processes such as Scrum.
Database inspection skills, particularly MySQL, would be a plus.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience in or knowledge of IT support roles in a large heterogeneous data center.

SUMMARY

Our Client is currently looking for a senior and experienced professional for a leading role in the Mobile Computing group. Reporting to the VP, Mobile Computing, this individual will be responsible for actively seeking out, evaluating and incubating new business opportunities, beyond the company's already established traditional handheld/tablet business in the Healthcare industry.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Developing original business plans from scratch where theres a high degree of ambiguity.
Identifying and evaluating product opportunities which leverage company assets. Able to dive deep on a broad range of assets from a highly technical perspective.
Identifying partners to support entry into and execution within new markets, forging business relationships with partners.
Examining industry structure and technology trends through primary and secondary research.
Thorough competitive analysis, with a deep dive on product/technology.
Working collaboratively with numerous internal stakeholders, at all levels, to seek their input and support.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

A minimum of ten (10+) years of deep experience within the healthcare vertical is critical for this role. The successful individual for this role will have direct and focused experience in this industry with a focus on mobile or connected products.
Bachelors degree in engineering or computer science, with strong academic standing
A Masters degree, in engineering, computer science or business administration, is an asset
Five to ten (5 - 10) years in an engineering/product development capacity
Strong technical knowledge of products in the wireless sector
Experience championing and launching new products in a Product Management or Business Development capacity
Excellent written and oral skills
Must be able to work with minimal supervision and produce rapid, self-generated results
Ideally experience in a start-up environment

Software Developer (Real-Time Applications)

Based in Toronto, our client specializes in the design, development and manufacture of real-time, mission critical traffic management and control systems.

The purpose of this role is to provide software development as part of new products design and manufacture. Your experience will include strong technical skills with key strengths in real-time software development.

Job Functions:

Work within a team developing high performance and sustainable traffic control and management systems, focusing on reusable components, stable interfaces, and common libraries; analyze requirements and use appropriate technologies to produce component, subsystem, and application level designs.

The work will include:

Interfacing with internal and external stakeholders in order to determine their (evolving) needs
Document (consistent/complete) requirements, based on the needs, cost and schedule
Analyzing complex functions, procedures, and problems to deliver creative, logical, and effective solutions using good design principles that satisfy functional and non-functional requirements
Develop software solutions through supporting technical documents including interface and design specifications, coding, test plans, deployment, operation and support
Conduct / participate in design and code reviews, identify potential problems and performance issues, provide feedback and corrections, evaluate code compliance to standards
Troubleshooting and problem resolution.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering, or applicable technical or scientific discipline and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in software development for engineering applications, with in-depth knowledge and experience in the following:

Developing real-time software using C/C++ in a Linux environment
Object-Oriented Design and Programming (OOD/OOP) experience using C++
Experience with formal software engineering processes, including requirements management

Team player with excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills
